Diversity is extremely important in high school because it helps students feel seen, respected, and valued for who they are. When people from different backgrounds come together, it creates an environment where everyone can learn from each other instead of judging differences. Diversity helps students understand that not everyone grows up the same way or has the same experiences, and that is okay. As Mariah Gabb, a junior at OFHS, explains, “Diversity is important at our school because it brings together students with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, helping everyone learn from one another whether it’s culturally or socially. It encourages an open-minded approach to others by allowing students to see the world through different viewpoints of their peers. By embracing diversity, our school creates an environment that prepares students to succeed in a diverse society, while also creating a safe space for everyone!” Her words show how diversity helps students grow as people and prepares them for life outside of school.
A diversity club plays a major role in making sure that this kind of environment actually exists. It gives students a place where they feel supported and accepted, especially those who might feel different or left out. Being part of a diversity club can help students feel less alone and more confident in being themselves. It also gives people a chance to talk about real issues in a respectful way. Kira Floyd, a senior at OFHS, says, “I think having a diversity club is extremely important for all schools. . . A lot of the people in our school are very privileged. . . These students often have little to no understanding of heritage and cultures, making them sometimes insensitive.” This shows how a diversity club can help educate students who may not realize how their words or actions affect others.

Diversity clubs also help to prevent racist bullying and create awareness and understanding. When students learn about different cultures and experiences, they are less likely to make hurtful jokes or comments. Education leads to empathy, and empathy leads to respect. Racist bullying often comes from ignorance, and diversity clubs work to stop that, fostering open conversations and teaching students to be more mindful. When schools actively support diversity, it sends a clear message that bullying and discrimination are not acceptable.
Lastly, diversity clubs help students feel connected and united, even if they are different. Jawaher Yassin, a senior at OFHS, shares, “I think diversity club is important because it gets people to feel connected in many ways. Having a club like this also makes people educated on cultures and other things people do around the world.” Feeling connected makes school a better place for everyone. Overall, diversity and diversity clubs make high school safer, kinder, and more welcoming, helping students grow into respectful and understanding adults.
