The Italian Grand Prix concluded with Max Verstappen proving, once again, why he is one of the most feared drivers on the grid. Many Formula 1 (F1) fans are also relieved that McLaren’s winning streak has ended, thanks to Mad Max himself. During qualifying, Verstappen achieved pole position while also simultaneously breaking the all time F1 fastest lap record with a staggering 1:18.792 with an average speed of 265.6 km/hour. Since Redbull’s chassis, the RB21, is very prone to understeering and shines mainly on the straights, Monza is the perfect circuit for the car to excel, providing many opportunities for Mad Max to push the car to its absolute limit.
Following Verstappen and his 19-second gap on the podium, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took P2 and P3 respectively, followed by Leclerc and Russell on P4 and P5. To summarize the race: Verstappen had to hand over his pole position to Norris after corner cutting, though he reclaimed the lead by the 4th lap. Nico Hulkenberg also had to retire from the race after his Sauber C45 reported issues with the power unit. Joining Hulkenberg was Fernando Alonso, who retired due to suspension failures. Oliver Bearman received a 10-second penalty after colliding with Carlos Sainz.
Now fans are gearing up for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and its famous Baku street circuit. Oak Forest student Josue Pintor predicts that McLaren’s duo will claim the top positions on the podium thanks to their superior chassis, while I personally hope for a change in the standings as the F1 season slowly approaches its conclusion.
