Our whole history has been taught to us based on what people wrote in the past. Long before the written word, people drew their history, and even today, some of these drawings remain for us to see. Once people started documenting their lives in books, they were able to gain knowledge over the course of history. Therefore, while many people find books useless today, they were what helped the people in the past be able to move forward and enhance their technology.
Books informed and entertained people for many centuries before the cellphone was invented. People gained knowledge from reading and found themselves able to apply that knowledge in their everyday lives. It can be inferred that people who read gain more information than people who spend most of their time on their phone. Reading also has benefits like reducing stress, improving writing skills, expanding vocabulary, and boosting memory. An anonymous student said, “Being on my phone sometimes gives me anxiety, so I would rather read a book. It helps me have a calm mind and more healthy thoughts.”
On the other hand, phones can cause many people to be insecure about themselves. Although you can access information more easily on a phone, it’s not always as reliable as books. Books typically come from dependable sources, unlike phones, which often draw on sources that haven’t been fact-checked. An anonymous person said, “Phones have helped me to find certain information, but I’d say that books are far more reliable than sources from my phone.” Phones can cause mental health problems and severe anxiety. People get very sick from being on their phones because they become so obsessed with changing their bodies that they eventually develop eating disorders. Books are not only a more effective way to learn certain information, but they also provide a healthier form of entertainment.
