Throughout history people have been disobedient, which has led to much change throughout time. A great example is the Civil Right Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, the American Revolution, and the French Revolution. In doing these acts of disobedience, people were able to advance politically and socially. Although some people could say that disobedience is not useful–that it is, in fact, destructive–disobedience has helped many people and created much more progress for humankind.
Disobedience is a valuable human trait that has helped many people and sparked social change. Many revolutions throughout the centuries have been made through disobedience. It has helped people advance and gain more rights in society, as it did during the Civil Rights Movement, which led to change for black people in America. Through the practice of civil disobedience, black people were able to gain better rights and removed barriers that were previously closed. Social change is how people move ahead. Social change is sparked though acts of clear disobedience to authority.
Without disobedience, society couldn’t move forward and people would be stuck with oppression and tyranny. We as the country of the United States of America wouldn’t be a country without the disobedience of our founding patriot forefathers. If our forefathers didn’t disobey the British authorities, Americans would still have to pay taxes without representation in the British Parliament. America wouldn’t have had freedom and choice without the use of disobedience.
Change simply isn’t possible without a clear disregard for obedience. In the late 1700s, the people of France couldn’t afford to eat bread. While the First and Second Estates had all the food that they wanted, the Third Estate (which included more than 95% of France) was in some cases starving. When the King and the First and Second Estates didn’t allow change, the Third Estate formed the National Assembly and vowed not to disband until the Third Estate received what it wanted and deserved. This was in clear disregard of the King and the first two estates. But the people used disobedience against the authorities to enhance their rights and feed the many sections of France that couldn’t afford bread.
All of the evidence and examples above show how disobedience is indeed a valuable human trait that promotes social progress. Without disobedience, society wouldn’t have advanced. People used disobedience to get rights and other necessary privileges that they deserve.
