Homework: the work we do at home. Why do we have homework? How did it start?
Homework is there so that we don’t forget what we did during the day, but homework takes away from our free time. It can take up a lot of time and can make students stress out. If we didn’t have homework, and we had more free time, we wouldn’t have to worry as much about school. However, if we didn’t have homework, and we just forgot about what we learned, what would be the point of going to school? Homework helps teachers determine how well students understand their lessons. It teaches students how to problem solve. Homework exists to teach lessons beyond what’s taught in the classroom, too.
While the intention of homework is to check students’ knowledge at home, there is a fine line between productive work and busy work. Did you know that homework was once banned? In the early 1900s, Ladies’ Home Journal launched a crusade against homework, enlisting doctors and parents who said that it damages children’s health. In 1901, California passed a law abolishing homework. The real question is why shouldn’t homework be banned?
One reason why homework is important is that it allows students to practice and reinforce what they have learned in class. Izzy V. says, “Yes, we should have homework because we can learn and help our minds get a better understanding.” Another student responds, “No, it takes up too much of our lives.” Which is it? Should we keep homework or get rid of it? Tell me your opinion in the comments section.
