Our school is certainly diverse, especially in terms of culture. What is culture, though, if traditions do not drive it? Who are we if not a part of the past, the present, and the future?
Culture is a part of identity. Culture is unity. We all want to celebrate ourselves and our community. To do that, we plan a fair to show off the many different worlds within our school.
Last school year, hundreds of freshmen packed into the IMC, watched performances, and learned about their peers. It was so crowded that even the least-read book had some company that day. But it wasn’t enough. There were Irish dances, lively Nigerian performances, and an incredible display of Indian culture. There were groups representing Palestinians, Mexicans, and so much more.
It wasn’t enough.
This year, there will be organized performances. There will be music and food from around the world. How can we possibly fit all of this into the IMC?
Other high schools, such as Andrew, have spectacular culture fairs. Some are even open to the public. Why can’t we do the same? There are over 21 different languages spoken at this school. Many of us are descended from immigrants and want to celebrate our past (otherwise known as our heritage).
The Diversity Club and the Heritage Dance Club want to have the Culture Fair in the field house because we want to share our worlds with more than just freshman English classes. We want the space and the acknowledgment that if there was ever anything to celebrate or unite us, this is it.
